His Royal Majesty, Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, the traditional ruler of the Igbo community in Ghana, has extended heartfelt greetings to Nigerian workers in celebration of this year’s May Day. In solidarity with other national figures, Eze Ihenetu acknowledged the resilience and hard work of Nigerian workers amid growing economic challenges.
In a statement released from his palace, Obi-Ukwu Obieziokwu, the monarch commended the efforts of the workforce under the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero. He praised their enduring spirit in the face of rising economic pressures and limited resources.
Eze Ihenetu noted that while Nigeria grapples with its own economic issues, such difficulties are not unique to the country, as similar struggles are seen worldwide. However, he emphasized the urgent need for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all levels of government to take practical steps toward improving workers’ welfare and ensuring a more robust economic environment.
“As we mark Workers’ Day, it is imperative for governments at all levels to prioritize youth empowerment and job creation,” he said. “Thousands of young Nigerians leave higher institutions each year with limited job prospects. Investing in mechanized agriculture can create massive employment opportunities while enhancing food security and reducing the insecurity affecting our communities.”
He joined other voices in calling for a prompt review of the national minimum wage, currently pegged at N70,000, stressing that a fair and living wage is essential for sustaining the dignity and productivity of Nigerian workers.
